"From the Ground Up: Gardening the MELA Way"
Chicago Flower and Garden Show, Navy Pier
Thursday, March 13, 2:00 to 5:00 PM

2:00 p.m. - Approaching the Soil     MELA members Mike Flynn of Growing Power and Bill Scheffler of Pure Prairie Organics help you get started beneath the surface. Basic soil chemistry, composting and vermicomposting are among the subjects that will be covered as they show you how to literally give your plants a healthy foundation.

3:00 p.m. - Seeds and Selections     MELA members Mayo Underwood of Underwood Gardens and Julie Siegel of J. Siegel Designs, Inc. will take you through the process of deciding which plants will do well in your garden with a minimum of care and chemical crutches. This includes tips for starting plants from seed and for buying healthy plants at your local nursery.

4:00 p.m. - Earth-Friendly Pest and Disease Control     MELA members Jennifer Brennan of Chalet Nursery in Wilmette and Oak Park landscape designer Connie Cunningham of Connie's Organic Garden Care will present earth-friendly solutions to the area's most common insect pests and diseases. They will demystify these low-impact products so that even the beginner gardener will feel comfortable incorporating them into their gardening experience.

All of the seminars will include sample products and handouts to enable gardeners to hit the ground running this Spring.
