Programs
University of Illinois
The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences (NRES), in partnership with the College of Agricultural, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences (ACES) and the Office of Continuing Education (OCE), now offers an innovative bachelor's degree completion program in horticulture for working professionals and community college students in the Chicago area.
The horticulture curriculum requirements are identical to the on-campus program in Urbana.
On-campus faculty and qualified adjunct faculty will teach these courses at locations in the Chicago area, with hands-on experience at the Chicago Botanic Garden , The Morton Arboretum , and the Multi-University Center in Oak Brook.
Master Gardeners
Master gardener training includes such topics as botany, soils, vegetables, fruits, flowers, trees and shrubs, grasses, landscaping, insects, and diseases. In order to be certified master gardeners must volunteer time to programs that benefit the public.

CHSAS is a magnet
school that draws students from across the city for its
unique and innovative college prepatory program. Five
agriculture career path programs are offered. All of the
students at CHSAS have the opportunity to participate in
internships with agriculture- related employers

The College of DuPage offers an ornamental horticulture program, with an Associate in Applied Science degree. It also offers certificates in ornamental horticulture, floral shop management, landscape design and construction, greenhouse management, landscape and turf maintenance, and nursery and garden center management.

The Horticulture Program graduated its first class of nine students in 1972. Since then, the program has grown to eleven full-time and five part-time faculty who teach hundreds of students. The average age of the horticulture student is 38, yet they range from high school students to senior citizens. The diverse faculty includes two landscape architects, two Illinois certified arborists and two graduates of the American Floral Arts Schools. The Horticulture Program is accredited by the Professional Landcare Network .
The program offers six specialization degrees and numerous certificates.

The department features hands on experience in the areas of floral design and greenhouse management, landscape design and botanic gardens. The program houses a retail flower shop, greenhouses and a botanic garden. Ornamental horticulture students are involved with various floral design competitions and consistently win awards for their pieces.
