We need your help

. . . to carry out several initiatives that we hope will
prove beneficial not only to our membership, but to
landscapers throughout the region. They are:

Compost sources.
We all know how difficult it is to identify good compost sources, especially given the lack of national or even regional quality standards. So MELA wants to list the sources that our members have come to know and trust. Just send a short note to info@melaweb.org giving us the name and contact information and why you like using this compost. Also let us know whether you have tested the product or whether your information is based on landscape health or anecdotal evidence. If you're a MELA member and sell compost, we'll list your company, but it would be helpful to have a testimonial from a customer.

Container recycling.
We think it's ironic that at the same time the green industry is promoting the use of native plants and encouraging their clients to think in terms of plants that use up fewer resources for their landscapes, we continue to contribute tens of thousands of plastic pots to landfills all over the country. Do you work for or know of a nursery that accepts used containers? Do you know of another way that these containers can be reused or recycled? We want to put that information on our website. Again, write to us at info@melaweb.org with that information so that we can begin building a database with the ultimate goal of pressuring the industry to stop this shameful waste.

MELA Smart Plants
What are the plants that work for you in your landscapes? Are they natives? Do they require less water? Do they out-perform the usual suspects? We know that there are thousands of species out there, but we'd like to start a list of "MELA Smart Plants" on our website. We'll list as many categories (annuals, perennials, trees, shrubs, shade, sun, etc.) as we need to. Obviously, if you have favorites, you need to tell us where to get them, too. Again, send your information to info@melaweb.org .

Those are the three initiatives we have in mind right now. In each of the three areas, we hope that this will start a dialogue about that particular issue. We hope you'll all take a minute and drop us a line about one of these initiatives.
